The Wizard Nebula: Sharpless 142
The Wizard Nebula (Sharpless 142) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus. It is sometimes referred to as NGC 7380 but this designation actually refers to an open star cluster within the nebula. The star cluster is embedded in the nebula, which spans some 110 light-years. The stars of NGC 7380 have emerged from this star-forming region in the last 5 million years or so, making it a relatively young cluster.
This star forming region is located approximately 7,000 light years away. It was discovered in 1787 by Caroline Herschel, sister of Sir William Herschel.
There is a fine dark nebula off to the right.
As Apod says: What powers are being wielded in the Wizard Nebula? Gravitation strong enough to form stars, and stellar winds and radiation powerful enough to create and dissolve towers of gas. More of a sorcerer, I think.
